Woven Belt - Zemgale Region, Latvia
Anna Apinis is a Latvian weaver who came to Australia in 1950. She made this belt for her daughter to wear as part of a Zemgale national costume when she finished high school. The ornateness of this belt indicates that it is part of a woman's costume. It was woven on a hand-made back-strap loom using the ‘pick-up’ technique. The belt utilises traditional Latvian patterns symbolising the ‘Morning Star’.
