Length of fabric using ‘Auseklis’ motif - Zemgale Region, Latvia
Anna Apinis is a Latvian weaver who came to Australia in 1950. She made this piece for an order for a national costume to be worn at Latvian functions. Although it was made as a skirt length it was displayed as a wall hanging for many years. The pattern features the Northern Star or ‘Auseklis’ motif, one of the most popular motifs in Latvian design. It was made on the traditional countermarch draw loom using 17 shafts. Anna brought this loom with her from Germany.
