Grace Cossington Smith is considered one of the pioneers of the Modernist art movement in this country, as she was one of the first Australian artists to experiment with Post-Impressionist techniques. As she explained, "I have always wanted, and my aim had always been to express form in colour — colour within colour, vibrant with light". She created this work while living with her invalid sister at their family home, Cossington. It was a scene she painted multiple times, exploring different colour ranges to great effect.
