Servants’ bells (1)
Heritage Victoria photograph
From the interactive exhibition produced by Heritage Victoria Viewbank: Unearthing a Forgotten Colonial Homestead in Melbourne Suburbia.
Life at Viewbank was revealed by some of the domestic items found. These included plates and other dinnerware, a mustard pot and even a series of metal servants' bells.
An extensive system of metal servants’ bells was incorporated within the Viewbank homestead. Different rooms within the homestead had bells of different tones – servants were expected to learn which tone related to which room and move to the correct room on hearing the bell.
