In 1917 Beaver & Purnell designed a three-storey apartment building at the corner of Malvern and Irving Roads, Toorak. Presumably Purnell named it ‘Tsohshaan Mansions’ (‘tsohshaan’ is supposedly Cantonese for ‘house upon the hill’). This building still exists and is currently in excellent condition. It has Chinese-style concave eaves while the third storey, which hovers gracefully above the lower levels, looks like a Chinese hall or pavilion.
