Tilly Aston as a young woman. She is wearing a high necked blouse with her hair up and flowers arranged around her neck.
Tilly Aston founded the Victorian Association of Braille Writers (Australia's first Braille Library) in 1894 and the Association for the Advancement of the Blind (both are now part of Vision Australia) in 1895. The Association went on to obtain improved rights and services of international significance including the world's first voting rights and free postage of Braille for people who are blind or vision impaired. Tilly was also the first woman who was blind to be admitted to an Australian university and was Australia's first teacher who was blind. She was very talented in the arts and was a prolific author publishing seven books. (Vision Australia)
