Packinghouses in Somerville and Tyabb were built in the early 1900s and many local people were then employed as fruit packers.
The fruit industry around Somerville and Tyabb was first established after settlers took up land around 1860. To enable the settlers to earn an income, fruit tree nurseries were planted followed by vast orchards. The fruit industry continued to flourish until the 1960s when growth in population lead to its decline as property owners subdivided their land.
