Deborah Halpern 'Angel'

Sculpted by Melbourne artist Deborah Halpern, Angel is an approximately ten metre high mosaic work originally commissioned by the National Gallery of Victoria in collaboration with the Australian Bicentennial Authority in 1986 in commemoration of the bicentary of European settlement in Australia. It was sited in the moat of the National Gallery of Victoria (International) till 2002, before being moved to its current location at Birrarung Marr.

It incorporates over 4,000 individually hand cut and painted tiles and comprises of 16 main images including a crocodile, fish, angels, birds, plants, scrolls and mythical creatures.
