Monash Gallery of Art

860 Ferntree Gully Road WHEELERS HILL Phone: (03) 8544 0500 Visit Website

MGA is one of Melbourne's most significant art galleries. The gallery holds a substantial collection of Australian photographs and operates an active exhibition program. It is the only public gallery in Australia committed exclusively to collecting Australian photographs. MGA's collection is one of the finest in the nation and traces the early development of Australian photography and includes examples by many of the country's most important twentieth-century photographers, including Max Dupain, David Moore, and Olive Cotton.

Our Collection

MGA develops and preserves a collection of Australian photographs that has national scope. This includes over 2000 photographs, ranging from 19th century albumen prints to contemporary digital media. The collection represents the work of significant Australian artists, and takes account of key periods in the development of Australian photographic history. In this respect, MGA stands alone as the only cultural institution whose collection is focussed on telling the story of Australian photography; we are the home of Australian photography.

MGA is unique among Australian cultural organisations, indeed, it is the only cultural institution in the country whose collection is focussed solely on Australian photographs. As such, MGA is a cultural institution of national importance. Photographs in the MGA, City of Monash Collection form the basis of MGA's exhibition program and are loaned to other museums and galleries on request. The MGA, City of Monash Collection is a highly significant cultural asset for the people of Monash and beyond.
