Our Collection

The McLeod Gift Collection, managed by Burrinja, on behalf of Yarra Ranges Council is a rare collection of Aboriginal and Pacific art. It contains over 600 objects, including Aboriginal art from across the country including canvas paintings, drawings and barks paintings and ceremonial artefacts from New Ireland and New Britain in Papua New Guinea.

Over 200 objects in the McLeod Gift Collection of Pacific art originate in New Ireland and New Britain in Papua New Guinea some of which were created by master carvers Ben Sisia and Hosea Linge (deceased). These are very rare items (Malangan) which were produced for specific ceremonies usually to be destroyed or discarded after the ceremony. Some of the Aboriginal paintings were created by some of Australia's most significant and internationally recognised artists such as Rover Thomas Joolama, Jack Dale Mengenen, Emily Kame Kngwarreye and Queenie McKenzie. Part of the collection are also 300 drawings on paper produced by members of the Nganjmirra family (Arnhem Land).
