About the organisation
Established as an artists' colony in the 1930s by Justus Jorgensen, Montsalvat is a cluster of medieval-styled buildings. It was founded as a home and studio for artists and craftsmen of all persuasions.
Artworks include fine sculptures by Matcham Skipper, reclining nudes and bronzes, and gargoyles and corbels by Helen Lempriere. The Great Hall contains paintings by Jorgensen and other members of the group and carved furniture. The luthiers can often be seen crafting violins, guitars and shakuhachi flutes.
